There is a sportsman's show in Abbotsford that includes a lot of fly fishing shops etc. Michael and Young will be there, they said, although their name does not appear on the exhibitor list as yet. The show is on March 2-3-4, near the airport. This is their website.

Here is a fast and accurate way of letting someone know where you have gone fishing and is also a useful way of providing directions for someone; like, "Where is Steelhead Park"? Bring up a map in http://www.topozone.com/ and click on the area where you expect to be. That will create a red cross symbol on the map. In this example, the cross is on Squalicum Lake. Next, on the Topozone map, click: "mail this map". The recipient will get the following message: Here's a USGS topographic map from the TopoZone! http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=48.79818&lon=-122.34924&size=m&u=4&datum=nad27&layer=DRG

Outing Report

Well here we are, into September already and we have two outings coming up. The first is a day trip to the Stilly for a float down looking for Cutthroat trout. The next is a fall trip to Chopaka Lake.

The Day trip to the Stilly is on the 21^st of September. We will meet at Arlington on the upper boat launch site at 9:00 AM where I will give away a small box of flies for Cutthroat Trout. This will be a float down the river so bring your pontoon boat or your hard bottom boat. There are two take out points, the one being about 3 ½ stream miles down and the other is about 7 ½ miles down stream at Silvana.. Bring a sack lunch with you. REMEMBER BRING YOUR FLOATATION DEVICE WITH YOU. THIS IS THE LAW NOW. As club members we must set a good example for others to follow.

The next outing after the Stilly is the Chopaka Lake trip. I will have a pass out at the September meeting for those of you that are interested in going. The dates for that outing are October 7^th and 8^th. I will have a chili

feed and fly box draw for that one so if you want to win you have to show up. Well, “HOW DO I GET THERE YOU SAY!” Its simple you just take HWY # 5 down to the Cook Road, and head east on the Cook Rd. to Hwy # 20. Turn left and follow Hwy 20 all the way till it joins with Hwy 97 and follow Hwy 97 all the way to Tonasket where you turn left at the sign for Loomis and follow that road all the way through Loomis till you come to Toats Coulee Road where you turn left and follow it till you come to the road to Chopaka Lake. You will know it because it is the only road that climbs steeply up the hillside. Once on this road you take the second right down into Chopaka Lake.

Remember Enjoy yourself on these outings and have your floatation device with you if you are in a craft where you use oars or motor to propel yourself around.

September's Program

Our speaker for September is Jack Cook. Jack is a fly fishing guide specializing in the Skagit, Sauk, Skykomish and Grande Ronde. His talk this month will be about fishing steelhead and Atlantic salmon on the fly. He recently returned from a trip to Labrador and will have information on that area as well as other steelhead opportunities both nearby and far away. It should be a very informative and enjoyable show, so come out and get in the mood to catch some big steelhead!

Conservation Report

Bill Hall and Craig Carlile looked at the Sumas River where it is crossed by Alm Road to assess it as a future rehab project.  Although this stretch is downstream from the notorious Swift Creek silt slide, the bottom is coarse sand and the current is good.  It needs shade, root wads and logs to provide habitat for the many fry we saw.  The landowner, Gary Thomas, is involved in a federal CREP agreement to improve the stream.  (See this link.)

What a guide I had on Tues. on the Upper Skagit, really first class but watch him. He gives you flies with no points. Do they call that conservation by not landing a fish. Hope to see you all next weekend on the Upper Sk.
